WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK
To work in Australia in some industries and roles, you may need additional certifications such as RSA, RSG, White Card, and Working With Children Check. Let's see how they work!
RSA, or Responsible Alcohol Service.
The RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) certificate is essential for working in the hospitality sector. You can get it through a specific RSA course which focuses on the regulations relating to alcohol consumption in Australia. The certificate qualifies you to sell or serve alcohol and is mandatory to work in all those places where alcohol is sold and served, for example pubs, nightclubs and restaurants.
Alcohol regulations are specific to each State/Territory, so you must obtain the RSA certificate in the State where you plan to work. In most States/Territories you can obtain the certificate by taking an online course; once you get it, you will need to go to one of the Service Australia centers with your certificate and identity documents to request the RSA card which will then be sent to your address.
The RSA course usually lasts around 6 hours (if carried out face to face, in class) and costs between 100 and 200 AUD depending on the provider and the State. The duration of the certificate varies from State to State.
Searching on Google you will surely find several institutes that offer this course in class; as mentioned, however, it is also possible to complete it online. In this case, we recommend Express Online Training and Online RSA, both RTO registered providers. Express Online Training offer additional courses, such as for the White Card.
RSG (Responsible Service of Gambling) or RCG (Responsible Conduct of Gambling) certificate.
The RSG (Responsible Service of Gambling), specific to NSW, or RCG (Responsible Conduct of Gambling) for all other Australian states/ territories, is mandatory in some states to work in any pub, gambling establishment (like casino) and other places where customers can play gambling or slot machines. The certificate is obtained through a course whose aim is to teach some legislative notions about gambling in Australia and provide information on how to recognize whether a customer is gambling responsibly.
The course can be completed on the same day, and online. At the end of the course, a certificate and a registration number are issued which must then be provided to the employer. Each State/Territory has its own certificate, so for example an RSG certificate obtained in New South Wales will not be valid in Tasmania and vice versa.
The certificate is mandatory in NSW, QLD, Tasmania; in Victoria and SA you have 6 months from your employment start date to complete and pass your training, while in NT you have 3 months only. In WA is not mandatory.
There are several providers which offer this certificate, like Express Online Training which we mentioned above.
White Card.
The White Card (also known as general construction induction card) is mandatory to work in the construction sector. People must attend a course focused on safety standards on construction sites in Australia and at the end, they will receive their certificate, which has different colors based on the state that issues it. It is mandatory Australian wide and is sometimes also required for road traffic control work. Unlike RSA and RSG, it does not expire and is valid in all Australian states.
In some States it is possible to obtain the White Card either in class or online, while in others people are required to attend an in-person course. Once you pass the test, an online or paper certificate is issued, while the White Card is sent to your address within a few days.
Once again, you may visit the Express Online Training provider website to find out more, or search for a different provider like Edway.
